JAMES: The idea of doing a ‘Best of’ for Echotone had been percolating for awhile, alongside maybe a new tune as a way to bookend the collection. During the 2020 coronavirus pandemic we actually had the time to sit down and pull this together.

The lyrics are about looking back really, thinking on what you made and the people you made it for. I think it’s a nice encapsulation of what we were good at as a band and works as a companion piece to ‘Song About Tomorrow’ at the top of the album (I’d had the same sort of idea when we were making Things We Lost, Things We Learned, but the song wasn’t there at the time). Consider it a fond farewell.

lyrics

Gather your friends and link your arms
Embrace those happy days
We saved within a song
We sang our hearts, we watched them fly
We shared our yesterday’s goodbye

We gave our best with heads held high
We gave our words to those
Who left before their time
While you’re still here and so am I
We’ll sing our yesterday’s goodbye

So we sit here in the bow lines
As the light begins to fade
Singing songs about tomorrow
Singing songs of yesterday
So we sit here in the bow lines
As the light begins to fade
Singing songs about tomorrow
Singing songs of yesterday

Gather your friends and link your arms
Embrace those happy days
We saved within a song
We sang our hearts, we watched them fly
This was our yesterday’s goodbye
This was our yesterday’s goodbye
This was our yesterday’s goodbye
This was our yesterday’s goodbye
