about

I have no memory at all of the writing or recording of this song, but I think it was after we’d made 'Sun Dream' but definitely before Mel and Paul joined the band and we made 'Cloud 666'. This was never played live or re-recorded, but it feels a prototypical Echotone song of that period; a quick and upbeat acoustic-based tune that carries a more melancholy undercurrent in the lyrics. The piano solo in the middle, in particular, seems to me now like it’s wandered in from a different, jauntier tune.

lyrics

Tell it all just like it is
Don’t be ashamed of your own fears
Don’t be weighed down by what you had
You know that shit’s all in the past
Don’t let it haunt you through the years

Be the best that you can be
Don’t apologise for what you need
Do what you have to to get by
’Cause we’re all living our own lie
And it don’t matter what they hear

’Cause time after time and year after year
It’s dragging me down, it’s pulling me near
Do you see me waving? Grab hold of my hand
I need you to save me
From this sinking sand

Sell it all just like it is
Don’t be afraid of your own tears
’Cause we are broken but unbowed
So raise your voice and sing it loud
And there’ll be nothing left to fear

’Cause time after time and year after year
It’s dragging me down, it’s pulling me near
Do you see me waving? Grab hold of my hand
I need you to save me
From this sinking sand
