about

JAMES: Written specifically for Mel to sing lead on. I remember Paul working really hard on nailing the drums for this and us all being delighted when he did. We ended up closing a lot of shows with it, including the final gig at IndigO2, which you can hear on the appropriately named Out On The Town. The song was written in that mid-to-late 20’s period where you start realising that you’re really not 19 anymore.

PAUL: It was a fucking nightmare to learn the quite tricky drum beat but boy did it feel good when I cracked it! The massive hug from James when we played it for the first time live in The Golden Fleece was a great feeling indeed and one that will stay with me always.

lyrics

I woke from a dream last night
That all my tears and all my pride
Had crept away without a sound
Tommy passed the bottle down to me, to me

The drinks were cold, the bars were warm
The acts of friendship we performed
They bonded us, so it appeared
Forged of love and built of years
Our chains, our chains

We went out on the town
And we sang to the sky
Come the dawn, come the dawn
We went out on the town
And we sang to the sky
Come the dawn, come the dawn

Lately I’ve been feeling though
The things that we all used to know
And count upon have gone away
See the night give way to day,
It glowed, it glowed

Now I look around the room and
Realise what we once assumed
Would always stay had slowly changed
Faces friendly now are strange to me, oh to me

I was just a face in the crowd

I woke from a dream last night
And gathered up my wounded pride
To creep away without a sound
Tommy brings the van around for me, oh for me
