A song written for a bet, originating in a pub discussion between myself, the aforementioned Alan Reed, and a mutual friend as to whether The Smiths had ever had a song called ‘My Girlfriend Got Run Over By A Tractor’ (they didn’t, of course — the mutual friend was thinking of ‘Girlfriend In A Coma’ from Strangeways Here We Come). The bet then evolved for Alan and I to each write a song with this horrific title. I took the titular mishap pretty literally, though in my defence did try to put something of a twist in the tale. (This didn’t stop my girlfriend at the time getting upset about the song, by the way). I remember Lee commenting that we should take the melody and write some different lyrics to make it more publically palatable, but I found that once the two had become enmeshed in my mind one couldn’t be extricated from the other. The nearest we ever came to an (intentional) ‘comedy song’.
