I've Been Told

from Early Doors: Archive Recordings by Echotone

about

This was the first song that Lee and I wrote as a songwriting partnership; I remember sitting in Lee’s old bedroom hammering it out between us. The melody and lyrics came very quickly. My chief memory of recording this song is that Lee nailed the harmonica part on the first take, right the way through the song, no edits or dubs whatsoever. It was the first time he ever played it and maybe the best time, too. That sums up this period for me; as with the lyrics here and a lot of the tunes back then, things just seemed to arrive in bursts of fun and inspiration.

lyrics

I saw you, you smiled at me
And I knew my, my heart was free
And you told me your tales of woe
But you gave me things I could not hold
I could not hold

I heard you, you sang our song
And I knew I, I might be wrong
And you told me your make believe
But you gave me things I could not see
I could not see

’Cause baby I don’t know but I’ve been told
Yeah baby I don’t know but I’ve been told

I felt you, you touched my hand
And I knew my, my time was sand
And you told me your tales of woe
But you gave me things I could not hold
I could not hold
