PAUL: A real classic for me this tune. One of Lee’s finest! Was never really sure if it was a good or bad thing that he was getting his life back — was it good that he was in fact getting his life back having lost it or bad the fact that he lost his life to need to get it back — but I guess that’s the beauty of music, you read into it what you wish!

JAMES: We did a gig once in Cambridge at a venue whose name now utterly escapes me. The local BBC Radio station played ‘Getting My Life Back’ on the day of the show by way of promotion, which was a thrill. We also did the song on a local radio station in Essex as part of a live acoustic set, which annoyingly we did not record at the time. We recorded this version in a studio out in Essex and it was clear from the off it had to be the lead track on the EP. The cover art was a 3D painting that Mel had made of the band logo. In rehearsals we would also often refer to this song as ‘Getting My Wife Back’. No one was married at the time.

lyrics

Bring back the past, grip it so tight
Don’t let it out of your sight
Standing so proud, head in the sky
One thing’s the sunset don’t lie

My copper-toned tongue tastes not quite right
What have I become?
That silver-edged sword, it slices through
The orange steel moon

Oh, getting my life back from you
Oh, getting my life back from you

Jet-streams of dreams, powered by love
Watch them up above
Poisoned by grief, wiser than most
It’s just the looks that you boast

My copper-toned tongue tastes not quite right
What have I become?
That silver-edged sword, it slices through
The orange steel moon

Oh, getting my life back from you
Oh, getting my life back from you
Oh, getting my life back from you
Oh, getting my life back from you
Oh, getting my life back from you
Oh, getting my life back from you
